Fancy color diamonds are the diamond lovers' new frontier, due to the variety of color options and because they now offer an affordable change from their more traditional counterparts. Colored diamonds can occur in almost any color, including yellow, brown, orange, pink, blue, violet, red, green, and black, and are termed "fancy color" diamonds to distinguish them from their colorless cousins. Fancy color diamonds have been celebrated for centuries, traditionally trickling out of ancient mines in India, but now coming primarily from Africa and Australia. Before around 1985, colored diamonds were rarely discussed as a realistic purchase choice by the general consumer, primarily because these special diamonds, when found on the market, were offered mainly to high-end designers for custom-made pieces catering to the very wealthy.
